Understanding Water Softener Certifications

Certification logos are everywhere on water treatment boxes and websites. Here's what each one on our systems actually verifies — in plain English.

NSF/ANSI 44

Softener Performance

This is the baseline standard for residential water softeners. It verifies that a softener actually removes the amount of hardness it claims to, at the rated capacity, and that it regenerates correctly using the proper amount of salt.

The standard also covers structural integrity, brine system accuracy, and reduction of certain other minerals like barium and radium. Nearly every residential softener sold in the U.S. is required to meet these general requirements.

NSF/ANSI 61

Material Safety

This standard doesn't test performance — it tests safety. It confirms that every component that touches your water, from tank linings to valve seals, has been independently evaluated to make sure it doesn't leach anything harmful into your drinking water.

In practice, this is the certification that answers a simple question: is the equipment itself safe to have connected to your home's water supply, day after day, for years?

NSF/ANSI 372

Lead-Free

This certification verifies that wetted components (the parts of the system in contact with drinking water) meet the federal lead-free standard under the Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act.

It's a narrower, more specific check than NSF/ANSI 61 — it exists solely to confirm lead content stays below the strict federal threshold, and it's tested and listed separately.

WQA Gold Seal

Independently Audited

The Water Quality Association's Gold Seal doesn't replace NSF/ANSI testing — it layers on top of it. A Gold Seal product has been tested to the applicable NSF/ANSI standards, then subjected to ongoing factory audits and periodic retesting to make sure it keeps meeting them after it leaves the lab.

That ongoing-audit piece is the real value: performance testing confirms a product met the standard once, and Gold Seal exists to confirm it still does.

Made in the USA

Clack WS1 Valves

Every system we install runs on the Clack WS1 control valve — the industry-standard five-button valve engineered and manufactured domestically. It's the same valve platform Aquonyx builds its systems around, and it's what actually meters your water use and triggers regeneration.

Domestic manufacturing means shorter supply chains for parts and service, which matters when a valve needs a replacement seal ten years down the road, not just on install day.

One thing worth knowing: these certifications test distinct, non-overlapping things — a system can hold several at once, and none of them substitutes for the others. If you ever want to verify a specific model's current certifications yourself, NSF and WQA both maintain public, searchable listings by product name.
